Project Overview

The renovation and expansion of Michigan State University’s Munn Ice Arena mark a significant advancement in the university’s athletic facilities, bolstering the support for one of the most prestigious college hockey programs in the country. This project involved a 26,000 sq. ft. two-level addition alongside the renovation of approximately 12,000 sq. ft. of existing space, transforming the arena into a state-of-the-art facility for players, staff, and fans alike.

Facility Enhancements and Additions

The ground floor of the new addition has significantly elevated the arena’s functionality, featuring a dedicated weight room for the players, which showcases MA Engineering’s commitment to creating spaces that foster athletic excellence. Additionally, the relocation of administrative offices from below grade to the ground floor has optimized operational efficiency and accessibility.

Other notable spaces in the addition include:

  • Locker Rooms: Designed to meet the specific needs of collegiate athletes, providing a secure and comfortable environment for preparation and recovery.
  • Training and Hydrotherapy Rooms: Equipped with the latest in sports medicine technology, these rooms offer state-of-the-art facilities for injury prevention and recovery.
  • Shooting Stations: Allowing players to refine their skills in a controlled environment, contributing to their development and performance.
  • Stick and Skate Services: Ensuring that all equipment is maintained to the highest standards, directly impacting game-day readiness.
  • Player Lounge: A space for relaxation and team bonding, essential for building a cohesive and motivated team.

Renovated Spaces

The renovation component of the project focused on enhancing the overall fan experience and operational aspects of the arena, including:

  • Entrances: Creating welcoming and efficient entry points for fans, improving flow and accessibility.
  • Toilets, Concessions, and Support Space: Upgraded to improve the comfort and convenience for all arena visitors, elevating the event-day experience.

Mechanical Systems Design

Comprehensive design covering heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, and sprinkler systems, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for all users of the facility.

Electrical Systems Design

Included enhancements to lighting, power, and low voltage systems, integrating modern technology to improve functionality and efficiency across the board.
