Kemeny Recreation Center

Project Overview

The Kemeny Recreation Center in Detroit recently underwent a transformative $9 million renovation and expansion, introducing an additional 10,000 sq. ft. to its already vibrant community space. This project was meticulously planned to segment the center into three distinct areas: a sports area for active engagement, an activities area for community events, and physically passive spaces designed for relaxation and social interaction. A cornerstone of this renovation was a profound commitment to sustainability, incorporating advanced energy-efficient measures and systems throughout the facility.

Energy-Efficient Building Systems

The renovation embraced a holistic approach to sustainability, overhauling existing building systems to enhance energy efficiency. This included updating HVAC systems, lighting, and water usage facilities to reduce the center’s environmental footprint.

Water Conservation Measures

To address water efficiency, the center installed automatic flush valves, automatic faucets, and low-flow shower heads. These upgrades significantly reduce water consumption, aligning with the project’s sustainable goals.

Advanced HVAC Solutions

A key feature of the HVAC system overhaul was the introduction of an energy recovery unit specifically for the locker room areas, optimizing air quality and energy use.

HVAC units equipped with economizer cycles and duct-mounted carbon dioxide sensors were deployed to modulate outside air dampers, ensuring fresh air delivery is both efficient and responsive to the center’s occupancy levels.

Lighting and Safety Enhancements

The shift to LED site and interior lighting, controlled by motion, thermal, and other types of automatic sensors, has resulted in substantial energy savings.

Safety upgrades were paramount, with the installation of a new fire alarm and suppression system, alongside comprehensive security and camera systems for both the interior and exterior of the building.

A Community Beacon of Sustainable Design

The renovation of the Kemeny Recreation Center stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, sustainable design in community spaces. By integrating state-of-the-art energy-efficient technologies and systems, the center not only provides a dynamic and inclusive space for the community but also leads by example in environmental stewardship.

The Kemeny Recreation Center’s renovation and expansion project showcases how sustainable practices can be seamlessly integrated into community infrastructure projects, enhancing functionality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. This initiative reflects a growing trend towards greener, more sustainable community spaces, with the Kemeny Recreation Center at the forefront of this movement in Detroit. Through innovative design and engineering, the center is poised to serve as a model of sustainability and a cherished hub for community activities for years to come.
